Offshore Oil May Recover Sooner Than Thought
While much of the oil industry is seeing green shoots of recovery, the offshore sector’s been the exception, with some analysts saying offshore won’t start improving until 2018 or 2019. But after an upbeat 4Q reported by offshore leader Transocean (RIG), analysts at Evercore say the “offshore drilling trough may be closer than it appears.” Day-rates for offshore rigs appear to be bottoming above cash break-even, it says, adding tendering activity is also improving. Still, hard data points to continued weakness. The latest Baker Hughes rig count shows just 18 active US offshore rigs, less than a third the 66 active rigs in September 2014.
