We are carrying out quite a lot of study work on how you would do a gas cap,” Michael Townshend, BP’s regional president for the Middle East, said during a briefing at the ADIPEC conference in Abu Dhabi. A gas cap is the layer of gas above an oil reservoir. Normally oil is developed first and then gas once the crude resource is exploited, but Townshend said BP is looking at options for co-developing the resources. “In the next ten years you’ll see a lot more gas, probably [1 Bcm] or more, coming from gas caps,” he said. The news from BP follows a series of announcements from state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company outlining the company’s commitment to ramping up gas exploration. ADNOC is aiming to become a net gas exporter and has said it has an estimated total of 15 Tcf of gas reserves in untapped discoveries. It is targeting an unconventional gas production rate of 1 Bcf/d by the end of 2030. The company inked deals with Total, Eni and Saudi Aramco this week related to gas. Eni was awarded a 25% stake in the Hail, Ghasha and Dalma concessions with production from these blocks expected in 2024, Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, director of upstream at ADNOC told S&P Global Platts on the sidelines of the ADIPEC conference. Total also signed a deal Sunday to develop the Ruwais Diyab unconventional gas concession and first fracking is expected within weeks. First production could be as early as one year from today, according to Arnaud Breuillac, the president of exploration and production at Total. ?
