The move sees Santos increase its ownership and become the operator of a high-quality portfolio of low-cost, long-life conventional Western Australian gas assets with stable cash flows, he added. “The portfolio also includes a leading position in the highly prospective Bedout Basin, including the recent significant oil discovery at Dorado,” he said. Quadrant holds an 80% interest in the Dorado joint venture with Australia-listed Carnarvon holding the rest. Dorado’s initial production rate was earlier pegged at 50,000 b/d, but RBC Capital Markets analyst Ben Wilson said earlier this month that it could be in the range of 80,000-100,000 b/d. Santos said in a presentation in September that an appraisal program comprising 2-3 wells was planned for 2019 for the Dorado development with FEED targeted for 2020. Wilson said first oil could be expected by around 2023. Santos holds a 25% interest in the northern Australia Barossa-Caldita joint venture and is also a partner in Darwin LNG with 11.5% interest as well as a 13.5% stake in PNG LNG. Gallagher said that the acquisition lowered the company’s proforma free cash flow breakeven oil price to about A$32/b ($23/b). On completion of the acquisition, Santos paid $1.93 billion, comprising the purchase price of $2.15 billion less completion adjustments and cash acquired, the company said. Quadrant is one of Australia’s leading oil and gas companies, with a primary focus on the Exmouth and Carnarvon basins offshore north Western Australia, where, as of December last year, it had an interest in 21 exploration permits, 10 retention leases and 16 production licenses. It is the largest single contributor to the Western Australian domestic gas market and accounts for a significant proportion of the nation’s oil production, it added. ?
