The startup of the new unit makes Shell the largest global alpha olefins producer, Shell said. The unit began commercial operations in December, the company said. The new unit’s startup brought the Geismar site’s total production to 1.3 million mt/year. Alpha olefins are key ingredients in manufacturing polyethylene resins, various grades of which in turn make pipes, plastic food containers, grocery bags, shampoo bottles and other plastics. Alpha olefins also are used to make detergents, motor oils and hand soap. Construction on the new unit began in 2016. ?
