Marathon Oil (MRO) is picking up 21K acres in the Permian for $700M in cash, its second deal in the popular drilling field this month. Many shale producers have been trying to expand their footprints in region–which spans from West Texas into New Mexico–because it has arguably the best break-even prices among unconventional US drilling fields. With the acquisition, MRO now has more than 90K acres in the Permian, most of it on the New Mexico side.
