Schlumberger and Weatherford Announce Fracking JV
Schlumberger (SLB) and Weatherford International (WFT), two of the largest oil field service companies, announce a joint venture that would pool hydraulic fracturing assets and other equipment of both companies into a platform called OneStim. For SLB, which will have 70% ownership of the JV, the move provides new equipment to deploy in shale plays, an area where Halliburton (HAL) has had an edge. For WFT, which has 30% ownership, the deal provides a one-time $535M cash payment from SLB that could help pay down WFT’s debts. HAL, a competitor of both companies, also announces that it plans to reactivate twice the level of equipment as originally planned and warns it could lose short-term profits in a play to expand market share.
