Exploration and production companies, many of which are US shale producers, collectively reached a point of profitability in the first quarter of the year, the first time in six quarters they have done so, according to Bernstein Research. About 60 companies achieved the feat, although production held roughly flat, and the sector underspent organic cash flow for the third consecutive quarter. The companies returned a profit of about $1.30 per barrel of oil and gas equivalent in the quarter, the research shows.
