Nigeria’s National Oil Corporation Plans Two Refineries in Niger Delta The Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. plans to build two refineries in the Niger Delta as part of efforts to end imports of petroleum products, it said Tuesday. The 100,000-barrel-a-day refineries will be located in the oil-hub of Port Harcourt and Warri-both in the Niger Delta region where the largest percentage of the country’s crude oil is exploited, Maikanti Baru, NNPC’s group managing director said. He said a group of investors had commenced the process of relocating a refinery that was previously owned by BP from Turkey to Nigeria to be installed in Port Harcourt under the NNPC’s refinery relocation initiative. “It’s not a modular refinery, it’s a normal refinery with about 100,000 barrels per day capacity. It was owned by BP, but it has been sold off now to companies that want to bring it over from Turkey to install it here in Nigeria,” Mr. Baru said. He added that a similar plan to establish a brownfield refinery near the Warri refinery “is also in the offing.” Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, imports nearly all its gas though it has four refineries with a combined 445,000 barrels a day capacity. Mr. Baru didn’t give the cost of the refineries or when they will begin operating adding that the NNPC drive is to “expand our local refining capacity and make Nigeria a global refining hub.” ?
