August non-LST ethane rose 25 points day on day to a $3/MMBtu premium over natural gas futures. S&P Global Platts last assessed ethane higher in February 2014. Market sources attributed recent price strength to continued ethane rejection at gas plants due to fractionator constraints in Mont Belvieu, along with cracker demand and exports. Ethane consumption reached 44 million barrels in May and 43 million barrels in June, according to Jacobs Consultancy’s Hodson Report.
